Comments
As is the case with many bands, they get their start during their creative stage writing and developing their sound live while under less pressure. Their best material is on their first album or two and then the pressure of writing while touring and recording under a record contract leads to watered-down compositions. Here, on Unsung Heroes, the Dixie Dregs, or Dregs as they then became known, fall victim to this formula, unfortunately. We have heard these songs before in different forms and there is little, if any. progress. Yes, the virtuosic playing and arrangements are still stellar, but they sound a little tired and bereft of new directions. As on previous outings, we have rock styles on Cruise Control and Rock and Roll Park, country on I'll Just Pick, Weather-Report-like jazz fusion on Kat Food, and a nice ballad on Day 444. Perhaps the only new direction is on the album closer Go For Baroque in the style of Kansas. I have been a big fan of TDD but this record sounds forced and recycled. If you want to hear what the group can really do stick to their first 4 records. This record is still good and probably important for fans but I seriously doubt they made many new fans with Unsung Heroes.
Steve Morse was simply unstoppable including all his bandmates ! ... How I miss that sound & tone of his Legendary Frankentele !!! ...
Dixie Dregs... I loved them back then and now how much more. We need to make sure that Dixie Dregs gets to anybody that loves real music. Thank you for your post Ian.
To me, their best album, with Industry Standart and Dregs From The Earth.
